Anthony,

What a great find!

I have never been a poker player myself, but have played it a few times.

As their website shows, this is another strategy game that has been taught to digital computers and was able to surpass human human beings, along side: Chess, Checkers, Othello, Connect Four, and Jeopardy. This is another great milestone in the area of Game Theory, but I am not sold on it being a milestone of artificial intelligence though. The poker application had to use the brute force approach to know how to play the game by "playing the equivalent of more than a billion, billion hands of poker." This isn't intelligence per say in my book. To me, it is about memorizing more games than a human will ever play, and values. For me, it doesn't appear to be about being able to make an educational guess as to what the next move should be. In my opinion, this is shown in the rest of the same paragraph, "With each hand it improved its play, refining itself closer and closer to the perfect solution. The program was trained for two months using more than four thousand CPUs each considering over six billion hands every second! This is more poker than has been played by the entire human race."

I really love the name they decided to use for the poker application. They call it: "Cepheus" (SEE-fee-us). What I find really cool on their website is the actually give people a little background into the name, which is what you and I have been trying to do on this forum since its beginning, give background information on tons of stuff. Here is what they say about the name, "Cepheus is a constellation in the northern sky. It contains the star Gamma Cephei, which will become the northernmost visible star in the night sky sometime around the year 3000, taking this distinction from the star Polaris." (You can read more about it at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cepheus_%28...llation%29) This really makes me wonderful what people on Earth have actually seen in the sky while we have been here.

Out of educational purposes, I am going to change the subject from the Cepheus poker project to:

How our solar system moves through space

Here is a YouTube video to demonstrate it:

Well done Walter for Warping My Poker Thread into another Dimension in a StarTrek way... as a Thread about Space! Smile

And Yes! Walter I am a little beyond belief at the moment that a Computer Program can really play Perfect Poker until I test out the Program ? because...

BLUFF! has always been a Human Man (Maybe Woman ?) Domain above Computers capabilities for as long as I can remember!

http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictiona...tish/bluff

Then we move on to the BIG! Question "What is Intelligence" ? as Complicated as "What is Love"

Unintelligence could be putting Ones Head in a Gas oven and waiting for the Inevitable! ?

Then again if the Person doing it knew 100% that they were going to suffer a Slow Death in the Next moment (for a Long period of time) from some other Catastrophic consequence ? then they could be considered Intelligent ?

Anthony,

I take a bow for warping the thread from one topic to another even though the website you linked earlier sorta did the warping for me. I was playing off their site.

You are right, there is more to a game of poker than just trying to determine mathematically what would the better move is. Poker is about messing with peoples heads. Computers do not have emotions to mess with.

As the great Kenny Rogers sung in The Gambler: "You got to know when to hold them, know when to fold them, know when to walk away, and know when to run. You never count your money when your sitting at the table..."

Anthony,

Really cool free game of poke. Thank you.

As far as embeding YouTube videos into these posts, click on the tv drop-down menu and click on YouTube at the bottom of the list. Then a little box will popup and you will insert the video link URL, including the http:// or https:// part. If you continue to have issues, please PM me and I will see what I can do to help. The original post edit box I used on this forum doesn't want to work anymore, and I don't why. That is why I am creating a newer version of this forum.

Anthony,

Thank you for sharing this article. I really love how these showed some of the evils in this world where there is realistic fear in retaliation from companies (and governments [I am not a conspiracy theorist]) if we try to share our knowledge, discoveries, or creations with the rest of the world that could hurt them in pocket. This is the main reason why this world ca not get any better because companies/governments do not want better technologies to exist because they would loose money, or go under. Also, many companies want to maximize their profits as much as they can by slowly dragging technology along. For example, Back in 1993, I read a computer magazine article that talked about this new thing call a CD-ROM. There was major arguments between the three companies that where developing this technology as to what size they wanted to bring out first. The article stated that the sizes were: "640K, 2GB, 4.7GB, 8GB, 16GB, 25GB, 32GB, 50GB, or 64GB".

The thing that really makes me mad as a consumer is that they had a 64GB CD-ROM back in the early 90's and we are only seeing a 50GB Blue-Ray, but it is a double-sided disc with 25GB on each side. Over 20 years have past and I have yet to see the 64GB the article spoke about, but I have seen most of the other sizes. I know the companies are out to make money, and I can appreciate what they did as a business person.

Anyway, thanks again.

Yes! Walter Smile

One thing about Vegas is that there should be a BIG! Sign outside every Casino lit up in Large LED Lights so that everyone that goes there is forced to read it! and it should say...

"WE DON'T MIND YOU WINNING Smile BUT NOT ALL THE TIME! OTHERWISE WE WILL FIND A WAY TO STOP YOU! Sad "

And that is the real Truth about Vegas or should I say Ve(GAS!) because it's full of it! Smile
